This Valentine's Day, Let's Debunk Some Waxing Myths..

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, there are lots of people looking into waxing for the very first time. Here are some common waxing myths, debunked by a licensed esthetician & wax specialist of 4 years!

Hand holding a tongue depressor coated in wax, wax dripping off of stick into wax pot. Wax is a light purple color.

Waxing is only for special occasions

This isn't true for a number of reasons, but I'll start with the simplest: you get the best results when consistently waxing for periods of time, so one-and-done waxing is not the answer if you're looking for long-term goals. This specific myth also suggests (to me, at least) that you're waxing for someone, for other people, for an event of some kind. Lots of people wax simply because they want to, they want less hair over time, they don't want to deal with shaving or other methods of doing it themselves. You can wax for a number of reasons & more than a few times a year if that's what you want.

It's ok to be intimate right after a wax (or the same day as a wax)

Definitely not! I always remind my clients to "avoid anything that causes friction, sweating or rubbing in the area for 24-48 hours after a wax" and if you've been in to see me, you know that's verbatim! Any of those things will leave you more susceptible to ingrown hairs and/or irritated skin. Even if you get a wax at 8am and your date is 8pm that evening, I still wouldn't chance it!

you can't wax if you have sensitive skin

Wrong! I will say, in my personal opinion, this could vary by waxer/ salon. Not every individual will be prepped and knowledgeable enough to wax sensitive skin, but it is possible. I see many clients with very sensitive skin and have adapted my techniques around it. Both waxes I carry are formulated for people with sensitive skin, they also are low-temp waxes, meaning it sits at a cooler temp than most other waxes, which just another sensitive skin-friendly tidbit for you!

waxing ruins v-day vibes with redness and irritation of the skin

Welllllll, if we go back to the second myth we debunked, you shouldn't have redness on Valentine's Day because hopefully your wax was before the big day!

In all seriousness, my best answer to combat this is to make sure your wax is booked 24-48 hours before Valentine's Day (or whenever your planned date night is!) to entirely avoid any problems altogether. During your appointment we'll talk aftercare and I'll do my best to ease your worries and ensure you have healthy, soft skin post-wax. Assuming you book ahead and follow the proper aftercare, your smooth skin should set whatever tone you want it to!

It's weird to sweat during your wax

It's actually normal to sweat during your wax!

Sweating is just your body's natural reaction to what's going on, every single person that comes in for anything more than a face wax is more than likely sweating. That's why I have a vinyl matt that's easy to disinfect and I use a hospital-grade disinfectant between each client to make sure everything is totally clean for the next guest!

Digital drawing of a wax bed, wax bed shows signs of sweat from someone laying down. Text reads: "It's normal to sweat during your wax" Text reads: "@ronniesrelaxandwax"

waxing is too high maintenance for v-day prep

This one just feels silly. Everyone is entitled to their own way of doing things and deciding what's right or not so right for them, and waxing is definitely included in that. If you are someone that waxes (or you've been wanting to) and you think a wax is something that will complete, or make your day better, then that's awesome! If you're someone who maybe the thought of a wax before Valentine's Day (or any other day, for that matter) has never crossed your mind, it's probably safe to say you can skip it and put your energy elsewhere!

I can't "debunk" this one, this one is totally up to each individual. My best advice is to do what you want, not what anyone else wants <3
