A lot of people seem to not really know the major benefits that come with waxing, and I’m here to change that! Any of my clients will assure you a big focus of my services is educating you on the service you’re getting. If you haven’t seen my post “Waxing 101“, I talk about what to expect during your first wax! How it works, why it works, tips, at-home care, etc. Here are my top 8 wax tips that I share with ALL my clients, but especially first-time clients!
TIPS YOUR WAXER WANTS YOU FOLLOW BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
Drink plenty of water. If you’ve had any type of body waxing done, I’m sure you’re probably used to how sweaty you can get during the service! Drinking lots of water will make sure you’re hydrated for your wax. It’s also just good practice to stay hydrated!
2. Wear loose or comfy clothes. Even after putting some aftercare products on to help with ingrowns and soothing, your skin will likely be irritated after a wax. To a degree this is normal, which is why waxers recommend wearing loose, comfy clothes to your appointment when possible. Dresses, sweatpants, tank tops, anything to give your skin some room to breathe will be beneficial.
3. Exfoliate regularly, and about 2 days before your wax.
Exfoliating is one of the big keys in waxing, especially if you want less ingrown hairs and easier waxes. That being said, you can over exfoliate. Exfoliating too much can do just as much, if not more, damage than not exfoliating at all. 2-3 days a week is all you need to do! Entire body would be preferred, but at the very least where you’re getting waxed.
Because waxing itself is a form of exfoliation that means you don’t need to exfoliate that day. I tell my clients 1-2 days before is okay, but I prefer 2 days if possible just to really prevent any distress to the skin during waxing. Exfoliating gets rid of dead skin cell build up, loosen up ingrownhairs for easier removal, and keeps your skin fresh! It’s a super vital step if you want to achieve the amazing benefits that come with waxing.
POST-WAX TIPS TO MAKE LIFE EASIER
No pools, baths, lakes, oceans, etc. for 24 hours. Pools, oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, baths, all big no-no’s the day of a wax! It’s recommended to wait a minimum of 24 hours after a wax. You have fresh skin, maybe open pores, and irritated skin. Do you really want to get in a pool with 50 other people you don’t know? Probably not.
2. No sex! (Mostly for brazilian clients, but still.) I get a lot of eye rolls with this one. I know that a chunk of people get waxed for this specifically. I’m not here to judge, I’m here to make sure you don’t get ingrown hairs! Similar to pools, beaches, etc. pushing that area of your skin into someone else’s, your both sweaty.. bacteria city. Which becomes ingrown hair city, sometimes even break out city! Protect your skin and plan your wax in advance if you know a special date is coming up!
3. Exfoliating regularly, 2-3 days a week. I know we already talked a lot about exfoliation but I just need to stress how important it is! After a wax, you should wait a minimum of 24 hours to exfoliate again. I tell my clients 2 days after because I always lean on the cautious side! If you don’t know your skin very well, it’s best not to test the waters so close to a wax.
4. Follow proper at-home care (not just exfoliating). We talked a lot about exfoliating, but there are other at-home care steps to do as well! Talk to your esthetician to see what they recommend, but I always recommend something to prevent ingrown hairs (not just an exfoliator, something with antiseptic properties to clean your pores) and sometimes a soothing cream. In a pinch, plain aloe vera is good for freshly waxed skin if you’re still a little ouchie afterward. Also in a pinch, Finipil is a great way to prevent ingrown hairs. Found on Amazon, in stores like Kroger or Walmart, apply a little bit each day to the desired area, it cleans out your pores and will prevent ingrown hairs and/ or breakouts!
5. Stay on track! Sticking to a consistent schedule allows your hair to start growing in evenly, all at the same rate. This also allows your hair to grow back slower, thinner and sparser between waxes.
